History of Huntington Hills

Huntington Hills was planned and developed by General Builders Corporation during the 1960s. Original promotional materials describe a carefully planned residential community designed around the wooded hills and natural landscape of the property.

A Community Designed for Its Natural Setting

The original brochure presented Huntington Hills as a 540-acre estate planned for approximately 450 luxury homes. General Builders emphasized wide, curving paved roads, underground utility lines, preserved trees, generous residential settings, privacy, shade and natural landscaping. Homes were positioned at angles intended to take advantage of each site and its views while allowing the architecture and landscape to complement one another.

The brochure described the community as combining modern suburban living with a country atmosphere and stressed that Huntington Hills was being built for future generations. A reception for town, financial and press representatives was held at Huntington Hills in May 1964 as the new development was being introduced.

General Builders Corporation

The sales brochure states that Huntington Hills was planned and built by General Builders Corporation, a publicly owned company that was then active in residential and apartment development in New York, Florida and Georgia. The company promoted large-scale planning, modern construction methods and craftsmanship as central features of its work.

Featured Huntington Hills Home Designs

Surviving brochure pages identify two prominently featured original Huntington Hills models: the Hamilton I and the Lafayette I.

The Hamilton I country ranch house in Huntington Hills

The Hamilton I

Described in the original brochure as “a country ranch house,” the Hamilton I featured a long, low profile integrated into its wooded setting.

The Lafayette I house in Huntington Hills

The Lafayette I

The brochure described the Lafayette I as a stately home combining traditional character with contemporary conveniences.

From the Original Development to HHPOC Today

The original plan for approximately 450 homes covered a larger development area than the present Huntington Hills Property Owners Corporation membership. Today, HHPOC’s working register contains 207 covered properties on Barrington Place, Beaumont Drive, Elkland, Farmington Lane, Montrose Place, Riga Lane, Roundtree Drive, Wilmington Drive and Woodmont Road.

The original emphasis on landscaped entrances, preserved trees, natural beauty and harmonious residential design helps explain why maintaining and improving the community entrances remains an important part of HHPOC’s work.

Historical note: This page is based on surviving General Builders Corporation promotional materials and HHPOC records. The Hamilton I and Lafayette I are documented as original featured models; available materials do not establish how many of each model were built or which model was the most popular. Additional historical materials will be added as they are located and verified.
